Did you know that the ash gourd fruit got its name from the colour of its skin; which is Ash, and the waxy shine on the skin; hence, it is also called Wax Gourd. It is mainly grown in the rainy season and people also call it the Winter melon.  In ancient medicial systems, the Ayurvedic preparation of ash gourd, known as ‘Kushmanda’ in Sanskrit,  was thought to have medicinal properties. The most famous  sweet, ‘Agra ka Petha’, is also prepared using the ripened ash gourd fruit soaked in sugar syrup. There are several other names for ash gourd that you might have heard of; it is named Donggua in (Chinese), Beligo in (Indonesia), White gourd, White pumpkin or Ash pumpkin

Nearly 96% of the edible portion of ash gourd juice, including the pulp and peel, comprises total soluble solids. 100 g of ash gourd comprises 12 g protein, 2.9 g fiber, 3.96 g carbohydrates, 0.6 mg zinc, 11.8 mg iron, and 30 mg calcium. The fat component in ash gourd juice is zero.

Moreover, ash gourd juice has 12.60% antioxidants, 4.60% alcohol, and 1.67% flavonoids. 100 g of ash gourd also contains plenty of vitamins. It has 0.04 mg vitamin B1, 0.14 mg vitamin B2, 0.5 mg vitamin B3, 0.17 mg vitamin B5 and 17.2 mg vitamin C.
