Kambu | Bajra has been consumed for many years by our ancestors and it has many health benefits. There are lot of traditional recipes with bajra that is still made the way our ancestors did which is both very healthy and tasty. Kambu is called Pearl Millet in English, Bajra in Hindi, Sajjalu in Telugu and Bajri in Gujarati. In our house we make different traditional recipes with kambu and if you pair it well with a suitable side dish, even children will enjoy eating kambu. My son prefers the regular rice dosa (pancakes) to kambu dosa, as rice dosas are more crispier but now after explaining to him about the health benefits of kambu, he is eating it more often now. There is one main thing  about the traditional diet that our ancestors followed, it is eating according to the season.

సజ్జలు ఒక రకమైన చిరుధాన్యము (Millet). దీన్ని ఆంగ్లంలో పెర్ల్ మిల్లెట్ అని పిలుస్తారు. సజ్జలు భారతీయులు, ఆఫ్రికన్ లకు వేల సంవత్సరాలుగా తెలిసిన పంట. ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్లో సజ్జలను ముఖ్యంగా సంగటి చేయడానికి వాడతారు.

Pearl millet is the most widely grown type of millet. It has been grown in Africa and the Indian subcontinent since prehistoric times. The center of diversity, and suggested area of domestication, for the crop is in the Sahel zone of West Africa. Recent archaeobotanical research has confirmed the presence of domesticated pearl millet on the Sahel zone of northern Mali between 2500 and 2000 BC. 2023 is the International Year of Millets, declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2021
